13 “Unlucky” Social Media Habits Hurting Your Business (Part II)

Earlier this week, I released the first half of the list of 13 “Unlucky” Social Media habits hurting your business. Here is the second half, filled with six more habits that you may have fallen into.

First a quick recap:

  1. Inconsistent Posting
  2. Not Using Captions
  3. Overusing Hashtags
  4. Sharing Misinformation
  5. Selling Too Much
  6. Ignoring Analytics
  7. Doom-Scrolling

8. Buying Followers – This used to be BIG! Luckily, most people now know that buying your followers is a bad idea. For one, the number of followers on your page is a vanity metric, it doesn’t really matter. What matters is your engagement, and these bought followers will not be engaging with your content. Your account can also be suspended if you are suspected of purchasing followers.

9. Not Replying To DM’s – This is customer service 101. Answer the phone, reply to emails. Check your direct messages and comments frequently. Someone took the time to reach out to you, be respectful and reply.

10. Posting and Leaving – Several years ago, Facebook said they want to build relationships, nurture friendships, basically make our time on the platform have meaning. And while they are a business, with the goal of making money, not losing it, I fully believe this is true. Scheduling or posting content and leaving the platform is the same as a one-sided conversation. You do all the talking but never listen. If you’re going to make time to post, make time to stick around and engage with other people’s content too.

11. Ignoring Trends – Trends on platforms like Instagram and TikTok can greatly increase visibility. If you choose to ignore them, it can make your content feel old and outdated. And don’t worry. Not all trends are dancing, or as mindless as eating laundry detergent.

12. Ignoring Negative Comments – The internet is filled with trolls and negativity. While true, some negative comments need to be ignored, many of them should be replied to.
And, nothing can hurt your reputation as bad as a negative review with no reply. It is a cue to possible new customers that you do not value your past clients enough to right a wrong.

13. Overuse of AI – I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again! Don’t be afraid to stand OUT from the crowd! AI is an amazing tool (I use it quite frequently, especially for photos), but it is a tool. Do not let it replace you and the true voice of your business. People want authenticity on social media, not something fake. Be you, be true to your brand, and you will stand out and reach the people meant for you.

And there you have it. The 13 “unlucky” social media habits that are hurting your business. Remember, there is a lot more to social media than just “posting every day.” Be sure you are posting with intention, and being true to your brand and yourself.
