This upcoming Friday is Friday the 13th! Considered one of the most unlucky days of the year (and 2024 has TWO of them!!). The day is filled with superstitions. Many avoid black cats and ladders! But what about social media? Did you know there are “unlucky” habits that can curse your engagement and account health? Read on to learn the first seven of the 13 “unlucky” social media habits that are hurting your business.
- Inconsistent Posting – This is such an easy one to fall into, especially if you are a smaller business. It can be difficult to wear ALL the hats and have ALL the time to do ALL the things, right? Coming up with a good strategy and posting consistently is very important. It trains not only the algorithm, but your followers as well, to know when to expect content from you.
- Not Using Captions – Many people watch reels without the sound on. If you are going to be talking, be sure to use the “Closed Caption” feature. Protip! Use the caption button found in each app. The apps LOVE when you use the features they provide over ones in programs like Canva or CapCut.
- Overusing Hashtags – There has been a LOT of discussion about hashtags the past year or so. No, they are not dead, yes, you still want to use them. But in a smart way. I like using between 4 and 7 hashtags in an Instagram post.

4. Sharing Misinformation – FACT CHECK! Incorrect information spreads like wildfire on social media. One of my favorites occurs almost every April when the full moon is referred to as a Pink Moon. Photoshopped images of pink moons fill my feed. But, it’s not called that because the moon turns pink. The Pink Moon got its name because of the beautiful pink flowers that start to appear in the Spring. 🌸
5. Selling Too Much – This is absolutely one of my biggest pet peeves. Sell, SELL, SELL!!!! No, no nooooo!!!! Only one out of every five posts should be promotional and for selling. Social media is for community, and building relationships. Build your brand, your trust, and your reputation. The sales will follow.
6. Ignoring Analytics – A question I frequently get asked is, “How often should I post?” or “What is the best time to post?” It truly depends. But I can tell you where to find the answer, in your analytics! See who follows your page, what content resonates with your audience and find the best days and times to post in your analytics reports.
7. Doom-Scrolling – We’ve all fallen victim to this one from time to time. Just keep scrolling, just keep scrolling, what do we do we scroll!!! Limit your scroll time and ensure you have intention behind your scroll time. That can be anything from engaging with followers to connecting with friends, and yes, even watching videos of pandas. Just set a timer and don’t lose your whole day scrolling.
