You may have seen a post in your Facebook feed saying you could take part in a Facebook settlement. This likely has you asking “what’s the deal with the Facebook settlement?” Here is a little background, and how to claim your share of the settlement claim.
According to the settlement website, if you used Facebook in the United States between May 2007 and December 2022, you can apply to claim your share of a $725 million settlement. The settlement is being is against Facebook’s parent company, Meta, who agreed to pay to settle a class-action lawsuit. On the website, users enter their name, email info, username, and a few other small bits of info. You can choose payouts via a prepaid MasterCard, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or direct deposit into their bank account.
The Facebook settlement is in regards to a lawsuit alleging Meta allowed Cambridge Analytica to access about 87 million users personal information. You may recall the name Cambridge Analytica. It is a former British consulting firm used by the 2016 Donal Trump presidential campaign. It is alleged that Cambridge Analytica paid Facebook developers for user data, which was used to target voters. Meta denies any liability or wrongdoing, but has agreed to paying this settlement.
Payout and How To Claim Yours
Payout amounts are likely to be fairly small. Some expect it to be about $20-$30. Users have until August 25, 2023 to submit a claim in the Facebook settlement. Payments are expected to go out late in 2023 or early in 2024.
Next time you see a post asking if the Facebook settlement is a scam, you can now confidently tell the poster that it is in fact legit, and they can submit their claim now. Once more, the settlement website is: https://facebookuserprivacysettlement.com/#submit-claim.
