I imagine most of you are like me, tired of hearing “unprecedented times” and “the new normal.” I am not denying these are unprecedented times and that getting back to “normal,” whatever that meant four months ago, is a long way away, but these terms are constant reminders that things are in fact, not “normal,” which can be quite unsettling. So, how do we cope with our current situation? How do we combat these negative thoughts and emotions? Both personally and professionally?

I practice my ABC’s. I am a big believer in the power of positive thought, just like the little engine that could, reminding ourselves of our abilities has a great power over our physical, mental and emotional state. The Mayo Clinic suggests positive thinking as a form of stress reduction and notes several studies have been done that show the endless benefits of positive thinking.
A lot is changing right now, and this current world can be a lot to handle. When I find myself struggling, I work through a list of 26 affirmations, each one reflecting an adjective starting with each letter in the alphabet that I frequently change up to fit what is currently going on and how I am feeling in that moment.
Here are a few examples:
Personal struggles of being pregnant during a pandemic
I am Awesome.
I am Beautiful.
I am Caring.
I am Delightful.
I am Enjoying my time exploring motherhood.
Professional struggles with fears surrounding job security
I am Accomplished in my field.
I am Bold.
I am Capable.
I am Determined.
I am Energetic.
I work my way through the alphabet and couple each adjective with an “I am” statement. You can do this quietly in your head or go to a place where you can be alone, focus on your thoughts on and say them aloud.
Not only is this an awesome, positive motivating tool in your toolbox, but it is a good way to get your brain some exercise. I do admit, I frequently struggle with the letters J, Q and Z, which turn this practice into a bit of a game for me, what words can I use beginning with those letters? What words would you select? Can you get through the entire alphabet?
Much love! CK
