Facebook recently announced third party tools will no longer work with the Facebook Group API. The Facebook Groups API will be shut off, or deprecated, on April 22. This means you willl not be able to use 3rd party tools to post or schedule to your Facebook groups.
As you probably know, Facebook groups are used for a variety of reasons. Some groups are run by individuals as a community forum for people with common interests, hobbies, lifestyles, etc. Businesses run groups to create that community for customers, this can be things like fitness or healthy living groups. Alternatively, some businesses use groups for their teams, think of an alternative to programs like Microsoft Teams or Slack. This change could have a big impact on these businesses.
After speaking with others in the industry and doing some research, there are a variety of theories as to why Meta is making this move. They are theories because Zuckerberg and Facebook didn’t state WHY they are making this change.
Theories on the Facebook Group API Change
Some believe it could be a privacy issue with concerns of user data in places it should not be. You may recall the class action lawsuit from last year involving Meta and improper use of user data. Read my article on that here.
Another theory revolves around the hot topic of AI. Mark Zuckerberg announced recently that Meta will be doing more with AI and putting more resources behind AI. An excerpt from his Feb. 1, 2024 post reads:
“Now, moving forward, a major goal will be building the most popular and most advanced AI products and services. If we succeed, everyone who uses our services will have a world-class AI assistant to help get things done, every creator will have an AI that their community can engage with, every business will have an AI that their customers can interact with to buy goods and get support, and every developer will have a state-of-the-art open source model to build with. I also think everyone will want a new category of computing devices that let you frictionlessly interact with AIs that can see what you see and hear what you hear, like smart glasses.”
Perhaps you’ve seen the Admin Assist in groups you manage on Facebook. Is the Facebook Group API going away because Admin Assist is here?

Some organizations are already thinking of moving groups away from Facebook because of this API change. Have you started thinking about moving your group away from Facebook? Does it even impact you?
Stay tuned as more comes from all of this and follow us on Facebook and Instagram.
